Last weekend the US Youth Futsal Nationals marked the end of the Futsal season.
This week we’ve started our spring outdoor training sessions. Then we go right into an outdoor tournament on the weekend. This makes for a quick transition between seasons but starting any season with a tournament helps to knock the rust off quickly and gets the team back in the flow of things very quickly.
The challenges of the outdoor game are so different than those of Futsal that anything I can do to make the transition quicker are helpful.
This week’s question is from Mike and is focused the roles of the fullbacks in a 4-4-2 formation.
Mike says:
“I play a 4-4-2 with a diamond in the middle. I am struggling a bit to figure out what I would do with my outside fullbacks? Assuming my outside mid’s play inside to create a channel for the outside back to make runs through, I am struggling where to put them in this type of exercise.”
In my answer to Mike I focus on the importance of defining the roles of your players and choosing the formation you use based on your players rather than forcing your players to adapt to a formation that doesn’t play to their strengths.

At the end of a season I think it’s useful to look back and identify what your players learned and plan for how you want to move forward.
With Futsal ending and the spring season starting I thought I’d share my thoughts today on our winter season. This may give you an idea of how to look at your team’s progress during the season and ways to plan for what comes next.

Next Week
Next week I’m going to look at the differences between coaching boys and girls. All boys and girls are different so you can’t apply the stereotypes to every situation but I think there are some general guidelines that will help you get the most out of both groups.

Tom. Always look forward to the podcasts. Listen to each several times. Rated, reviewed one but, in spite of trying several times, as a Luddite, I have been unable to since. I am so grateful for them that I will get some help.
My question: In this concussion conscious age, how do you avoid shots to the head in Wembley with multiple balls in play & in the Andy Barney 1v1 tournament format with multiple simultaneous games. Thanks
Tom Mura
Thanks Robin!
I don’t think you can avoid it entirely but in all of my years of playing those games I have never had a concussion occur during one of them.
Robin
Thanks Tom. Please keep up the great work.
