First of all, thanks to everyone that sent me an email, left a comments on the site or provided a rankings and reviews on iTunes about the 100th episode of the podcast. I truly appreciate everyone who takes the time to listen each week and I love hearing from you when you have a question or comment. Doing this podcast has forced me to evaluate what I do and your feedback has helped me improve the way I coach my teams. THANKS! We're not moving into the … [Read more...]
#099 Playing Up
In the last month my teams haven’t played every weekend due to spring break and a number of local tournaments that took up field capacity. One team hasn't played in three weeks. This has given us time to do some concentrated training. We've been able to work on improving some areas of our play without worrying about having a game on the weekend. I've this has helped us developmentally but at this point the players are getting a bit antsy. They're looking … [Read more...]
#097 Diving and It’s Effects on Youth Soccer
I actually spent more time refereeing last weekend than coaching. I’ve always enjoyed refereeing. Especially when I get to work with new referees. I can see why so many young referees quit. It takes a level confidence that most kids just don’t have naturally. Experience and success breeds confidence but we don’t give them a chance to develop confidence so we lose young referees who could be very good in the future. I talked about this way back in episode 7 A … [Read more...]
#095 Planning Valuable Team Talks
We had great feedback to last week's episode on checking your shoulder. The combination of the description, diagrams and actual training video really helped to paint the picture and show how the exercises are organized. If you haven't had a chance to listen to that one or see the videos in the show notes I would check it out. This has been a crazy spring break week in the midwest. Our training sessions were canceled on Monday and Tuesday because of the … [Read more...]
#093 Practice like a Girl, Compete like a Boy
This week is the two years anniversary of the podcast! It's hard to believe I've produced 93 different episodes in that time. I really appreciate everyone that listens to the show each week. If this is the first episode you've hear, WELCOME! If you've been here from the start then THANKS! This week my teams started the spring season with an outdoor tournament. The weather was a bit rough but it was great to get back outdoors playing the full-sided game … [Read more...]
#092 Reviewing the Winter Season
Last weekend the US Youth Futsal Nationals marked the end of the Futsal season. This week we've started our spring outdoor training sessions. Then we go right into an outdoor tournament on the weekend. This makes for a quick transition between seasons but starting any season with a tournament helps to knock the rust off quickly and gets the team back in the flow of things very quickly. The challenges of the outdoor game are so different than those of … [Read more...]
#091 Do You Have Confident Players?
This is the last week of Futsal. We start back outdoor next week. This weekend the US Youth Futsal Nationals are taking place here in the Kansas City area. Teams from all over the country are coming here to compete. Boys and girls teams from U9 to U19 will face off to determine the champion in 21 different divisions. I'll put together a complete report about the event for next week's show as well as how my teams are taking the lessons learned during the … [Read more...]
#087 Qualities and Habits of the World’s Best Coaches
I received some great feedback about last week's episode on developing your own style of play. Some coaches asked for show notes to be included. I usually don't include show notes on episode where there aren't any diagrams or training sessions to describe. But for this episode I've added show notes that include a worksheet that you can use to help you layout and describe your own style of play. Check out episode #085 Developing Your Style of Play for a … [Read more...]
#085 Developing Your Style of Play
I hope everyone enjoyed a great holiday season. It was a welcome break as our club always takes off the weeks of Christmas and New Years to give players and their families time to enjoy the holidays, spend time with their family and recharge for the second halve of the soccer year. I like the break from the weekly training sessions and games but I’m looking forward to getting back to working with my players again. They're really starting to understand the … [Read more...]
#083 Stealing Our Player’s Learning Opportunities
Last week I talked about the different options for playing soccer indoors during the winter. My teams played their first Futsal games last weekend. The beginning of the Futsal season is always a challenge because the players haven't adjusted to the speed of the game. They usually try to play too fast and think too slowly. The games can turn into a frantic game of 'turnover soccer' where neither team can keep possession and there's no flow to the game. It can … [Read more...]
