Last week was spring break for the schools in Kansas. The spring time here means that we often alternate between 80 degree temps on one day and snow the next. It also tends to be very windy at this time. I think the wind is one of the most challenging elements to train through. Especially when you’re on turf. It’s not just balls in the air that are affected but just dribbling and passing on the ground accurately becomes difficult. Each spring we have a … [Read more...]
#052 Coaching the Most Important Age Group
I’ve settled into a regular routine with our Instagram account. Each week I share a complete training session or progression of exercises from one of our books along with a couple of interesting photos or quotes that I’ve come across. I think it’s a great way to share drills and exercises because the comments section allows enough room for the complete description and coaching points. If you don’t have an Instagram account I would suggest you check it … [Read more...]
#051 How to Function Within the Formation
I’ve had some interest from a couple of coaches that are willing to be part of a coach’s roundtable discussion on the upcoming rule changes. I’d like to have four or five coaches involved to get a wider range of opinions. It won’t be difficult or complicated to be involved. You just need a free account on Skype and 30 to 45 minutes to talk. Email me at tommura@worldclasscoaching.com if you’d like to join the discussion We had our first weekend of the new … [Read more...]
#050 Developing Your Goalkeeper in a Team Environment
The roundtable discussion in last week's episode created a lot of feedback. Most appreciated the ‘behind the scenes’ look how clubs and administrators are preparing for the changes. Some were upset that everyone seemed to be in favor of the changes. We really didn’t get into debating the ideas behind the changes. We came at the discussion from, ‘Well, this is happening. How do we prepare’. If US Soccer would have opened up the discussion before deciding it … [Read more...]
#049 Preparing for the US Soccer Rule Changes
The focus of this week's episode is on the upcoming US Soccer rule changes that are affecting youth soccer teams throughout the country. As I mentioned at the end of last week's, I wanted to put together a group of Club Directors, Coach, League Administrators and State Association Officials to talk about the changes that have been either mandated or suggested by US Soccer and how to transition to these rules as smoothly as possible. I was fortunate to be … [Read more...]
#048 Do Your Players Lose the Ball Under Pressure?
I received an email from US Soccer Referees Department this week that included a link to US Soccer's Concussion Initiative. That link with allow you to download a PDF of the document. The US Youth National Teams and Development Academies will be implementing these new initiatives but it appears that each State Association and League will be able to make its own decisions about how to use this information. It covers new education guidelines for referees, … [Read more...]
#047 Finding the Moment to Go for It
I was listening to a podcast from Soccer Wire about the upcoming changes to age groups and small-sided game format. You can listen to the episode from this link. It got me thinking about all of the questions we have about the process and how the state associations, leagues and clubs will handle it. I'm putting together a round table discussion on the changes with an Executive Director of a State Association, a league administrator, and club director and … [Read more...]
#046 Encouraging Creativity and Developing Confidence
I want to share a training session that is intended to build confidence and encourage creativity. I've always spent a lot of time training 1 v 1 skills with young team so this is not a new concept for me but I was surprised at the impact this session had on my players. This training session works on the tool necessary to be creative and skillful but more than that it develops the mentality of the players to go for it and be confident when facing these … [Read more...]
#045 30 Scoring Methods for Small-Sided Games

#044 The Key to Being an Effective Coach
I'm sorry that last week's podcast wasn't released until Sunday. Our internet was out from Thursday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. I've prided myself on releasing a new podcast every Friday so this was extremely frustrating. If you missed the episode I'd encourage you to go back and listen because there's some great information there on shooting activities you can do with your team during the winter months. This week I want to focus on what I feel is … [Read more...]
