Thanks to the coaches that took the time to give the podcast a ranking and review on iTunes. I really appreciate your support of the show! One stood out because the coach commented that they would like the show to be longer because I sometimes gloss over important points. This got my attention because if there's something you want to know more about then I want to bring it to you. Please let me know if there's ever something on that show that you'd like … [Read more...]
#073 Drills or Small-Sided Games?
Last weekend was weird for me because I didn't have any soccer games! The first month of the season can be a very busy time so this break was a welcome one for me and the players. As I talked about in #071 The Importance of Recovery Sessions, it's important to balance stress and recovery so this short break could help the teams take an important step forward in the coming weeks. The players did seem a bit rusty in their first training session of the week. … [Read more...]
#071 The Importance Recovery Sessions
Now that we've been playing for more than a month of the season I have an update on Episode 58 where I talked about formations for 9 v 9 soccer. I had originally thought I'd go with the 3-1-3-1 or 3-2-3 I ended up taking the advice of our club's technical staff and have been using the 4-3-1 formation. At the start of the episode I talk about why I've done this and why I think it was the right choice. I had a question recently about recovery sessions. … [Read more...]
#068 Developing Spacial Awareness
We started league play here last weekend. With only a few practices to prepare I just pick a couple of key points that I want to focus on because obviously there's a lot to improve at this point in the year. One of the most important things to do early is to help the players develop confidence and to understand that I believe in them and trust them. One of my favorite quotes is, "They don't care how much you know until they know how much you … [Read more...]
#067 Training Your Brain
I had a fantastic week in Florida. It was actually a break from the heat we've had back here in Kansas City. I talk about my takeaways from the week and give you a sample CogiTraining session during this episode. You can also find the diagrams and descriptions in the Show Notes. But first I look at last week's controversy at USYS Nationals. I describe all of the details in the episode but the basic facts are that in the U18 G game between Carlsbad Elite (CA) … [Read more...]
#056 It’s Not the Same as Dribbling
Our Instagram Account now has more than 900 followers. We've posted more than 100 images including exercises, drills and small-sided games. The posts from each week are from a section of one of our books. Sometimes they are a complete training session other times they're a number of activities from one section. If you haven't checked it out already I would suggest you take a look because there are more diagrams of exercises ,along with detail descriptions, … [Read more...]
#054 Controlling the Ball Out of the Air
One of my favorite things about doing this podcast is the opportunity to talk about soccer training with other coaches. I want to share one email conversation I had this week. I thought that it was on a topic that a lot of coaches can relate to. Hi Tom: I enjoy your coaching podcasts. Relevant topics with good substance. I coach a U14G's team in Canada. We have 1 game per week, and three team practices per week. None of our team sessions focus … [Read more...]
#053 Agility and Competitive Shooting Games
Last week was spring break for the schools in Kansas. The spring time here means that we often alternate between 80 degree temps on one day and snow the next. It also tends to be very windy at this time. I think the wind is one of the most challenging elements to train through. Especially when you’re on turf. It’s not just balls in the air that are affected but just dribbling and passing on the ground accurately becomes difficult. Each spring we have a … [Read more...]
#051 How to Function Within the Formation
I’ve had some interest from a couple of coaches that are willing to be part of a coach’s roundtable discussion on the upcoming rule changes. I’d like to have four or five coaches involved to get a wider range of opinions. It won’t be difficult or complicated to be involved. You just need a free account on Skype and 30 to 45 minutes to talk. Email me at tommura@worldclasscoaching.com if you’d like to join the discussion We had our first weekend of the new … [Read more...]
#048 Do Your Players Lose the Ball Under Pressure?
I received an email from US Soccer Referees Department this week that included a link to US Soccer's Concussion Initiative. That link with allow you to download a PDF of the document. The US Youth National Teams and Development Academies will be implementing these new initiatives but it appears that each State Association and League will be able to make its own decisions about how to use this information. It covers new education guidelines for referees, … [Read more...]
