We have so many projects going here at WORLD CLASS COACHING that I just didn't have time to pull together a complete episode for this week. I'm working on a number of topics that I discussed last week but I've also added a new one, "What to do when your session is just not working". This happened to me last night and I'm sure we all have the experience from time to time. I'll let you know how I dealt with this situation, how are discovered what wasn't … [Read more...]
#073 Drills or Small-Sided Games?
Last weekend was weird for me because I didn't have any soccer games! The first month of the season can be a very busy time so this break was a welcome one for me and the players. As I talked about in #071 The Importance of Recovery Sessions, it's important to balance stress and recovery so this short break could help the teams take an important step forward in the coming weeks. The players did seem a bit rusty in their first training session of the week. … [Read more...]
#072 What Motivates Soccer Players?
Last weekend I had a great trip with three of my teams to a tournament. The kids played great and it was great time for the parents and player to get to know each other better. This week I’m looking at player motivation. I want to talk about what I think motivates players. The difference between motivation for games and training. What works for me and what doesn’t. The two areas that you are trying to motivate in game situations and the role of motivational … [Read more...]
#071 The Importance Recovery Sessions
Now that we've been playing for more than a month of the season I have an update on Episode 58 where I talked about formations for 9 v 9 soccer. I had originally thought I'd go with the 3-1-3-1 or 3-2-3 I ended up taking the advice of our club's technical staff and have been using the 4-3-1 formation. At the start of the episode I talk about why I've done this and why I think it was the right choice. I had a question recently about recovery sessions. … [Read more...]
#070 Developing a Line-Up
This week I go on a bit of about punting. What's the point of having a podcast if you don't get to vent every once in awhile. You can have equal time if you think I'm off base. Just leave a comment below or leave a voicemail message on the number I give at the end of the episode. My main topic for the week is focused on developing a line-up for your team. Putting your players into positions within a system of play not only helps them be successful but … [Read more...]
#069 Coaching High School Soccer
I've always enjoyed having an early season tournament to get my teams three or four games over the course of a weekend. This allows us to work on things from one game to the next and see a marked improvement in a short period of time. During a regular league schedule you have to wait a week to come back and see if the corrections you've made help the team play more effectively. The teams all played well. There are obviously a lot of things for us to work on … [Read more...]
#068 Developing Spacial Awareness
We started league play here last weekend. With only a few practices to prepare I just pick a couple of key points that I want to focus on because obviously there's a lot to improve at this point in the year. One of the most important things to do early is to help the players develop confidence and to understand that I believe in them and trust them. One of my favorite quotes is, "They don't care how much you know until they know how much you … [Read more...]
#067 Training Your Brain
I had a fantastic week in Florida. It was actually a break from the heat we've had back here in Kansas City. I talk about my takeaways from the week and give you a sample CogiTraining session during this episode. You can also find the diagrams and descriptions in the Show Notes. But first I look at last week's controversy at USYS Nationals. I describe all of the details in the episode but the basic facts are that in the U18 G game between Carlsbad Elite (CA) … [Read more...]
CSW Extra 6 – CogiTraining
This week I've been in Florida observing a camp being put on by Michel Bruyninckx, the developer of CogiTraining. The CogiTraining Method is based on research regarding cognitive neurology, neuropsychology, neurobiology, kinesiology, posturology, neuro pedagogics and didactics. The main goal is to understand how the brain is organized and to find out how human performance can be improved. The method includes that use of the SenseBall to improve the player's … [Read more...]
#066 Our New Training Center
My conversation with Andy Barney about his player development methods was very well received last week. I hope to have him back on the show in the future. Be sure to check out Episode 65 if you missed it. Today I give you a tour of our new WCC Training Center. We've been working on it for six months. The goal is to combine all of our coaching resources in one place to make it easier for you to search for and find exercises to plan your next training … [Read more...]
